Local OutreachSummer Kids' ClubSheridan-Emmett Park, between Beech and Union Streets, was the location of our First annual Summer Kids' Club in August of 2009. Each day from 10:00 a.m. until noon, a dedicated staff of CTR adults led anywhere from 15 to 30 children in a discovery of what it means to be a New Creation based on 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" Each day we sang songs, heard a Bible story, broke into age-appropriate groups for discussion, did crafts related to our theme or played great games on the open field. We had children from different backgrounds, countries, languages and religions represented, but all heard the simple story of Jesus Christ and how to have eternal life through faith in him. On Friday night we had a dinner in the park with around 200 people. We are still working on the schedule for Kids' Club 2010, so check back for more details to come! Pioneer ClubsKaren Lyons, our children's ministry coordinator, had a burden for continuing ministry to the children of our neighborhood that we began in the summer of 2009. In September of 2009 we began Pioneer Clubs, a worldwide outreach program for children that has proven to be a great success in sharing Christ in all of life with children in 1st through 6th grade. Each Thursday night, our kids get to see the love of Christ lived out before their eyes as they study the Bible, learn practical life skills, make music and in general have a lot of fun together. Each week they have the opportunity to earn badges to show their hard work. We have had opportunities to invite parents periodically through a Thanksgiving dinner, an ice cream social and a special Sunday when Pioneer Clubs was highlighted. Come join us on Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at the church for a great time of learning and playing together! ESL (English as a Second Language) MinistryManchester currently has at least 70 languages spoken, and new refugees arrive from around the world continually. The world has come to our doorstep. Very few of these people groups are large enough to support a church in their native language, and so the need for immigrants and refugees to learn English is enormous. There are a few programs in the city, but they by no means meet the need fully. We began our ESL ministry in January of 2010 with six teachers and three levels of classes. Students hail from India, Brazil, Peru and several other countries. Each class begins with scripture and prayer, and the teachers are all volunteer members of CTR. The curriculum we use is called "Side by Side," a standard in ESL training. Registration is always open, so please come or recommend our program to anyone you know who wants to develop their English skills. Classes meet Mondays from 7 - 9 p.m. at the church. (back) |
