In a nutshell, podcasting is simply online audio content that’s delivered via webfeed. Think of it as radio on demand. However, it gives you far more options in terms of content and program style than radio. While the field of radio has generally settled into few established types of programs, podcasting reflects more of the variety that is available on CDs.
The term podcasting is meant to rhyme with broadcasting and is a derivative of the iPod platform (hence the "pod"). While not directly associated with Apple's iPod device or iTunes music service, the company did contribute both the desire
and the technology for this capability.
Plus, podcasting is like TiVo for radio. That is, you can download whatever programming you want and listen to it whenever and wherever you want. You also generally have full access to the audio archives for the programs you like. This removes time, use, and content restraints.
One big reason for the overnight success of podcasting is attributable to the millions of portable mp3 players currently being used, with gigabytes of empty storage space and the mp3 format itself, which is ubiquitous on all these portable players. Think of your iPod as having a set of subscriptions that are checked regularly for updates.

NOW comes GODcasting... the next big web thing, in which sermons are recorded and uploaded onto the internet to be downloaded onto iPods and the like. MP3 Bibles have been available for a while, but according to the Religion News Service, there's now more pod preaching than pod "jazz, theater and movie reviews." It is not surprising that God is still popular, sermons were among the first American radio broadcasts as well -- Godcasting may end up being podcast's first major success.
